Manuel Hermenegildo appointed chairman of Inria's Scientific Board

Manuel Hermenegildo, professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, founder and director of the IMDEA software institute, was appointed chairman of Inria's Scientific Board on 9 November 2017. He succeeds Kurt Mehlhorn, who has held this position since 2015.
Born on March13rd,
1959, Manuel Hermenegildo holds two master's degrees in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1981) and in computer science from University of Austin, Texas (1984), where he obtained a doctorate in computer science in 1986. After beginning his teaching career in the United States, he returned to the Polytechnic University of Madrid in the early 1990s as a lecturer and then professor. Among other responsibilities, he chaired the Spanish Agency for the Funding of Scientific Research (2000-2002). Manuel Hermenegildo also founded the IMDEA software institute, which he has been running since 2007.
His main specialties are the design and implementation of programming languages, as well as program security. He has published over 200 scientific articles and monographs. He has received the Julio Rey Pastor Spanish National Prize in Mathematics and Information Science and Technology and the Aritmel National Prize in Computer Science, and is one of Spain's most highly cited and recognized researchers in the academic world. He is also an elected member of the Academia Europaea.
The Scientific Board gives its opinion on the major aspects of the institute's scientific policy, a policy that guides the work of the research teams. The Board gives its opinion on the development of research centres. It ensures consistency between changes in activity and the scientific programmes of Inria. The Scientific Board rules on the appointment of directors of research centres and their renewal in the position, in agreement with the board of directors.
