Interns and apprentices

Changed on 25/10/2023

Every year, Inria hosts interns in its research teams and support services (students of any level and trainee engineers). An internship at the Institute will appeal to those attracted by digital science and technology and the public research environment. Our departments can also take you if you are an apprentice, to open up new horizons for you and perhaps inspire a vocation.
These two schemes offer you the chance to gain some unique experience and will open up perspectives that will help you choose the direction of your future career.

At Inria, you can

  • Participate in the ambitious mission of a public institute working for the digital sovereignty of France and Europe, where the emphasis is on people
  • Enrich your professional experience at the interface between research and digital innovation
  • Contribute to the collective vitality of a committed, responsible institute which is attentive to its staff as well as to the key issues in society. For years, Inria has been committed to education in digital culture, environmental impacts, quality of life at work, disability, ethics, parity, diversity and equal opportunities: Inria gives meaning;
  • Benefit from a friendly, stimulating work environment and top quality working and material conditions;
  • Discover new intellectual approaches, develop your team spirit, take risks and innovate.

Internships

  • Research internships (undergraduates or final year students on postgraduate courses).
  • End-of-course internship (final year of a DUT technical diploma or a bachelor's degree) or mid-course internship.

For more information on these two schemes, see the Do an internship page : Do a research internship

  • End-of-course internship (M2): usually offered within a research support department. These internships, lasting 4 to 6 months, will constitute a significant professional experience and will not be limited to the performance of prescribed tasks. Interns are expected to show that they are capable of autonomy, rigour and a sense of responsibility. Consult the recruitment page regularly jobs.inria.fr/public/classic/en/offres
  • Observation placement (school pupils in the last year of junior high school or the first year of senior high school): each year, Inria hosts school pupils for their observation placement (1 to 2 weeks). Opportunities for completing such a placement and conditions vary between centres and departments.  For more information, you should contact the human resources departments of the centres and head office or the departments concerned directly.

Apprentices

Inria is a public institution which accepts apprentices in its research teams (development engineers, Masters 1 or 2 in computer science) as well as in the research support departments (communication, financial management, human resources, buildings maintenance, quality, etc.) at levels ranging from CAP (high school vocational certificate) to bachelor's or master's degree.

Conditions

  • Apprenticeships are governed by tripartite contracts between the apprentice, the employer and the apprentice training establishment;
  • Contract lengths can range from 6 to 36 months, depending on the length of the course;
  • Apprentices receive statutory pay based on their age, the stage reached in their course and the level of the training. It is generally between 25% and 78% of the minimum wage. You can evaluate what your pay would be on the sandwich courses ("alternance") website.

The admissibility conditions are :

  • Be aged between 16 and 30: the minimum age is 16 years. It may be lowered to 15 if the young person reaches this age between the beginning of the school year and 31 December and if he/she has completed junior high school. The maximum age is 30 years (i.e. the year before the 30th birthday), except in the following cases:
    • If the young person was already on an apprenticeship scheme, but wishes to sign another contract to take a qualification at a higher level than the one already completed, the age limit is 31 years (i.e. the year before the 31st birthday). There must not be more than one year between the two contracts;
    • If the young person was already on an apprenticeship scheme, but the previous contract was terminated for reasons beyond his/her control, the age limit is 31 years (i.e. the year before the 31st birthday). There must not be more than one year between the two contracts;
    • If the apprentice is a recognised disabled worker, there is no age limit;
    • If the apprentice is planning to set up or take over a business and this requires a certain qualification to be passed (e.g. individualised support schemes: Acre, Nacre or Cape), there is no age limit.
  • Be registered on a training course through an apprenticeship centre.

Whatever the host structure (research team or research support department), apprentices benefit from the same working environment as their colleagues and a tutor who monitors their progress.

So that we can study the feasibility of your completing an apprenticeship with us, please provide us with the following information:

  • The amount that your training establishment intends to bill to us (this sum must be included in the budget for the year when we host you). We are not liable for apprenticeship tax: we have to pay the training establishment directly all or part (between 30% and 100%) of the educational fees;
  • Confirmation that you meet the age criteria. In addition, with a view to your completing an apprenticeship with us, so that we can draw up a job description that takes into account both your request and our needs, please provide us with:
    • The training programme and its level;
    •  The pattern and length of presence in the workplace;
    • Your current level of knowledge and know-how concerning the specialist area you are aiming for.
